Beers from two of the nation’s best breweries will be fighting for favour locally this year – but it’s all in the name of friendly rivalry as award-winning ales from Butcombe and Liberation Group make elbow room for each other at the bar.
Butcombe Bitter is the West Country’s favourite beer and is brewed at the Butcombe Brewery, just outside Bristol, which was recently acquired by the Liberation Group. As well as its bitter, Butcombe Brewery produces a range of quality cask and bottled beers and ciders, which will also be made available locally.
The strength of the two breweries was demonstrated ably at the recent Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival in Nottingham, where Butcombe’s Crimson King and Liberation Ale took gold and silver respectively in the Best Bitters Class.
The Post Horn, St Mary’s Country Inn, Five Oaks Bar and Eaterie and the Old Court House at St Aubin will have Butcombe Bitter and Butcombe Gold permanently on tap, and will also be available as guest ales at other Liberation Group venues. In return the Jersey-based brewery has despatched Liberation Ale to Somerset where it will be tickling the taste buds of beer lovers in Butcombe pubs and bars.
Mark Crowther, Chief Executive of Liberation Group said, ‘We are very happy to have Butcombe Brewery’s ales on tap in our pubs. Beer lovers enjoy trying ales from different parts of the country and to be able to offer them two quite contrasting beers from the same family is exciting. I know that regulars in our new pubs in Somerset and Avon will be just as pleased to try Liberation Ale and over the coming months I hope we will be able to introduce each other to more of our excellent ranges of beers and ciders.’
Butcombe Bitter is an award winning beer Silver Medal in 2013 Champion Beer of the South West and 2013 Bronze medal at the Great British Beer Festival. It is available in both cask and bottle. It is made with pure spring water from the Mendip hills and has a notably clean-tasting, refreshingly dry and distinctive flavour. Butcombe’s uses the Rolls Royce of malts – Maris Otter - and a blend of English hops to create a moreish taste and classic amber colour.
Butcombe Gold is available in both cask and bottle and is a refreshing golden bitter brimming with character derived from the use of a single variety hop, English Fruggles and made with 100% Maris Otter malt. In its heartland of the South West it is known as Gold in a Glass.
Liberation Ale is a multi-award winning golden beer, also brewed using Maris Otter and lager malt, and has a well-balanced, moreish taste with a hint of citrus on the nose.
