The Bar at St.Helier Waterfront

Manager at the Bar, James Craven tells all about the Bar

We see all types at The Bar. People who live on the Waterfront, town residents, people from the country parishes who come in to work or shop, business people, trendy people, families, visitors - you name it, they come here.

Why do they come?

I think probably because they want to be in town but have a sense of space at the same time. This is an enjoyable place to come at any time of the day. At The Bar we might have sophisticated diners downstairs in the intimate restaurant and lounge, while upstairs there may be a corporate function in the bar and, of course, on long summer days we have our barbecue on the terrace so at any one time you might have one group of people in suits and another in shorts!

What is your favourite time of day at the Waterfront?

Goodness, that's a tough one. We open at lunchtime when we serve brunch or light meals. We get a lot of people who come for a healthy business lunch so in one corner of the restaurant we can have all these important deals being struck or celebrated while in another we might have a group of mothers who have met up for a welcome rest, a coffee and a chat about life in general. I really like that time of day because there is such variety.

In the evenings the tempo picks up - party bookings, romantic liaisons, special occasions. We get a lot of people coming in for a drink before going across to watch an early film, or coming in for a supper afterwards to talk about what they've seen. That's great because I get a first hand review and it helps me decide what I should go and see!

And of course we have just introduced "children go free" offers between 5pm and 7pm so now we are seeing a lot more families in the early part of the evening.

Sum up your Waterfront life

I can only speak for my own business but good food, friendly environment, lively atmosphere and every part of the day offers a different experience.
