Beer drinkers can honour the armed forces and boost the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal next month by raising a pint of Liberation Ale.
For the second year running, the Liberation Group which owns Victor Hugo Wines and 44 pubs in Jersey is donating 10p from every pint sold in selected pubs to the appeal. The participating pubs, which serve real ale, are: ‘the' Bar, Cock and Bottle, Five Oaks, The Halkett, Post Horn and St Mary’s Country Inn. The donations will be collected over the weekends of 6th and 7th and 13th and 14th November and on Armistice Day, 11th November.
The Chief Executive of the Liberation Group, Mark Crowther, commented: "We are delighted to once again be supporting the Royal British Legion and the outstanding work its members do in the Bailiwick in safeguarding the welfare, interests and memory of those who have served, or are serving in the Armed Forces. As casualties mount in Afghanistan we are continually reminded of the high price our troops are prepared to pay in the service of their country. The two-minute national silence on Armistice Day and the traditional commemorations held on Remembrance Sunday are not just about remembering veterans but are equally important in honouring those who serve today. What better way to show our respect for them all than by raising a pint of the Channel Islands’ own ale."
The annual Poppy appeal is the Royal British Legion’s principal source of fundraising. Last year Islanders gave generously to raise a grand total of £170,000 for the appeal.
The Chairman of the Jersey Branch of the Royal British Legion, Ken Soar, said: "I am delighted that the Liberation Group has decided to continue supporting our cause. By doing so they acknowledge the debt of gratitude we as a community have to our Armed Forces and in particular the work of the Royal British Legion in supporting the ex-servicemen. I am very grateful to them for their support and I will raise a glass to them in thanks."
