Liberation Group sponsor local students final project at the College of Further Education.
A talented young Guernsey artist will reveal her latest work this weekend, the culmination of nine months of planning and work.
College of Further Education student Fabiana Martins was suspended by her feet, five metres above the ground, from a scaffold for thirty minutes, in front of a live audience, while paint was poured over her from above. The performance was part of Fabiana’s final project to complete her BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design.
The series of "action paintings" that resulted from the performance will be on display this weekend at the Delancey Campus. The whole performance was videoed and the film, produced by Virtuoso Films, will be screened at the launch evening.
Fabiana Martins, who works part time at the Harbour Lights to help fund her studies, has been accepted at Bath Spa University to study for a BA in Fine Art. Liberation Group sponsored her final project at the College of Further Education.
Speaking about her work, Fabiana said: "This was a very ambitious project. The idea first came to me in August last year and I had to expand my skills because I had never managed a project this big. We had to clear a number of health and safety issues before we could go ahead. We invited an audience of 30 people to watch the performance, which involved pouring three different coloured paints over me at separate intervals. It wouldn't have been possible to produce this work without the support of Liberation Group and my other supporters. Now I am very excited about taking my place at Bath Spa".
Kenrick Brooks, Operations Director at Liberation Group said: "Not only is Fabiana a member of our staff, we recognise that she is an extremely gifted young Guernsey woman and as a local company we are keen to support homegrown talent. The result of Fabiana’s work is exciting to see and proof that here in Guernsey we have some exceptionally skilled performers and artists."
Fabiana's show is at the Delancey Campus (the former St. Sampson’s Secondary School) on Saturday between 6pm and 9pm.
