A New Look to a Traditional St Mary Setting - 08 December 2009
St Mary’s Country Inn reopens on Friday following a £250,000 refurbishment which has seen all the facilities upgraded but in keeping with the old charm of traditional Jersey architecture.

St Mary’s Country Inn is part of The Liberation Group, the largest pub and drinks industry group in the Channels Islands. Manager Steve Purcell said he was looking forward to welcoming back the regulars and hosting new clientele.

‘It’s looking absolutely fantastic and we are on schedule to open Friday lunchtime,’ he said. ‘We have bookings for Friday, over the weekend and Christmas so we expect to be busy but everybody is welcome to come along, see what great improvements have been made and try our the new menus.’

The General Manager at the Liberation Group, Penny Dawkins, said that every care has been taken to maintain St Mary’s long-standing appeal to the local community and visitors alike.

‘The new St Mary’s is all about relaxed drinking and dining in a stylish country pub where the regulars will, nonetheless, still feel at home as soon as they step through the door as the old ambience is still there. Our investment has not just been spent on the building and decoration, inside and out. In creating a new look and by placing greater emphasis on wining and dining - as well as meeting the growing demand for cask ales and cider - we have lost none of the old charm of a country pub,’ she said.

Nothing has been left untouched in the upgrade - including the toilets. There are feature fires (inside linking the lounge and dining area and a fire pit outside) and a specially designed wine wall and cellar. The décor, which combines modern and traditional materials to good effect, is complimented throughout by striking artwork.

Although the new menu reflects the trend for gastro dining, it combines the old ‘best sellers’ with new dishes. Diners can also choose portion sizes, including children who can order smaller portions from the choice of a dozen dishes on the main menu and vegetarians are well catered for with a selection of interesting dishes.

The pub has remained open on a reduced scale during the refurbishment which has taken two months to complete. It reopens for business in its new entirety on Friday 11 December.
